Best Beginners Trips – Winter

As we come to the end of the year it’s easy to make New Years’ resolutions and then fail to keep them – we all do it! But if yours involve getting outdoors, seeing more of the UK’s beautiful countryside and making new friends then we have some excellent ways you can get started this winter.

Walking in winter is really fantastic – fresh air, that golden glow the low sun has as it shines through the trees, the smell of wood smoke in the air, and a much quieter way to experience the landscape away from the summer crowds.

Here are some trips we have lined up during this winter that are perfect for those of you who may be new to spending a weekend outdoors. Of course they’re also suitable for the more experienced members who want to see somewhere new!

New Year's Eve!

Why not kick of January with a bang! We’re running a variety of different locations for New Years – so you can choose to spend 4 nights in the North York Moors or the Lake District. With reasonably large groups there will always be a range of walks on offer, or you can just stay in for the day by the fire! Each location has access to some stunning scenery, either the moors and valleys around Helmsley for the North York Moors, or the shores of Ullswater and the local hills in the Lake District.

Yoga & walking - Snowdonia

Various dates in January and February

Surrounded by the rugged landscape of North Wales, we settle down during this weekend to a series of yoga sessions interspersed with easy walks so you can see the best of the valleys and lakeshores. Perhaps we’ll be able to gaze up at the high peaks covered in snow before retiring to a café or an evening sitting by the log burning stove in one of our favourite places to stay. No previous yoga experience is required and we just know this weekend is the perfect way to start the year, leaving you rejuvenated after the Christmas excess and ready for the year ahead.

Cheddar Gorge and Mendip Hills

Sandwiched between the rolling hills of the Mendips and the flatlands of the Somerset levels, Cheddar is famous for its gorge, its cheese, and miles of excellent trails. Always a popular weekend, you’ll get to know this corner of South-West England from our cosy hostel and walk through everything from woodlands to winter pasture. And the gorge itself will take your breath away!

Jurassic Coast walking weekend - Lulworth Cove

Home to one of the most famous spots in England – the spectacular Durdle Door, there’s simply no end to the sites of interest on this coastal walking weekend, in the midst of the fossil wonderland of the Jurassic Coast. An excellent introduction to exactly what we’re about – great scenery, fantastic locations and a weekend full of memories. The coastal path here is a wonderful place to walk, with Lulworth Cove itself only a stone’s throw from the hostel.
