What does ‘Yr Wyddfa’ mean?: Yr Wyddfa roughly translates to ‘tomb’ or ‘cairn.’ According to Welsh mythology, it is said to be the final resting place of Rhita Gawr, a fearsome giant defeated by King Arthur. Legend has it that Rhita Gawr wore a cloak made of men’s beards, and after Arthur cut off his head, the cairn on the summit of Yr Wyddfa was built to mark the resting place of Rhita Gawr’s head.
