One of the most common questions we get asked at Large Outdoors is why a head torch is an essential part of the kit list, even in the summer months. It may seem unnecessary, but having a reliable head torch is crucial for your safety and convenience on our guided walks and social weekends. Whether you’re out walking in the hills, camping, or staying in remote accommodation, a head torch ensures you’re prepared for every situation.

Why You Need a Head Torch While Walking

Unexpected Delays
Even on the best-planned walks, there can be delays—maybe someone in the group is slower than expected, or there’s an injury that causes a delay. A head torch ensures you can navigate safely if your walk extends into dusk or darkness.

Night Walks
Many of our events, such as the Dark Skies Festivals, Sunrise Adventures, or Moonlight Walks, are planned for night-time. For these, a head torch is absolutely essential. Handheld torches or phone lights are not suitable for these trips, as you’ll need your hands free to balance on the terrain.

Dusk and Dawn Starts
On challenges like the Yorkshire Three Peaks, you may start or finish before sunrise or after sunset. A head torch allows you to stay safe while walking in low light conditions.

Signalling for Help
In an emergency, a head torch can be a lifesaver. It allows you to signal for help and makes it easier for emergency services to locate you if needed.

Why You Need a Head Torch at Our Accommodation

Arriving in the Dark
Many of our accommodations are in off-the-beaten-track locations, and street lighting isn’t always available. A head torch helps you navigate car parks and paths to the entrance, especially when you’re carrying luggage.

Respecting Others in Shared Rooms
If you’re sharing accommodation, a head torch lets you move around quietly at night without disturbing your roommates by turning on the main light.

Walking to the Pub
Many of our venues are near charming country pubs, but you’ll often need to walk down unlit lanes to get there. A head torch helps guide your way and makes you visible to other road users.

How to Choose a Head Torch

When selecting a head torch for a Large Outdoors trip, there are a few key features to keep in mind:

  • Brightness (Lumens): Look for a head torch with at least 100 lumens for hill walking. Anything less won’t give you enough visibility in rough terrain.

  • Battery Life: Ensure your head torch can last for several hours, and always carry spare batteries. Many torches have different settings so you can conserve battery power when needed.

  • Beam Adjustability: An adjustable beam allows you to switch between a narrow, intense light and a wider, softer glow—useful for navigation and general use.

  • Ease of Use: Make sure you can operate the torch easily, even when wearing gloves. Comfort is also important—choose a torch with an adjustable strap for a secure fit, even over a hat.

  • Weatherproofing: Check that your torch has some waterproofing. You’ll need it to perform in rainy conditions, especially in the mountains.

What Not to Bring

Handheld torches or using your phone’s light isn’t appropriate for our trips. You’ll need both hands free when walking in the hills or navigating rough terrain, so only a proper head torch will do.

Conclusion

A head torch is an essential part of your kit on any Large Outdoors trip, whether you’re walking at night, arriving at accommodation in the dark, or simply needing extra visibility. For your safety, we may not allow you to join a walk without one, so please ensure you bring a head torch that meets the requirements for your trip.
