Walking, Myths and Somerset Views – A Glastonbury Weekend

Spend a weekend walking through the landscapes that have inspired centuries of myth and legend, with relaxed trails, open skies and the company of a sociable group.

We’re based in Street, just south of Glastonbury, staying at The Bear Inn – a traditional pub with cosy rooms, hearty food, and a great spot to unwind after a day on foot. Over the weekend we’ll explore the surrounding countryside, wander into the town of Glastonbury, and walk up to the iconic Tor, enjoying views that stretch right across the Somerset Levels.

With local wildlife, peaceful trails, and the freedom to take it all in at a comfortable pace, this weekend offers a chance to enjoy a refreshing break with good company.

Exploring the Ploden Hill in Somerset

Suggested Itinerary

  • Check in to The Bear Inn from 15:00. Your Large Outdoors host will be in the bar or beer garden from 18:00 for a relaxed welcome before dinner at the hotel around 19:30.

If you’re early, Street has plenty to explore – including Clarks Village, a well-known outlet shopping centre set in the historic buildings of the original Clarks shoe factory.

  • After a hearty breakfast (cooked or buffet style), there's time to grab a packed lunch from a local shop or bakery before we set off walking straight from the door.

Today’s walk takes us through peaceful farmland, ancient tracks and open countryside, following rivers and skirting woodlands, with views across the Somerset Levels and distant Mendip Hills.

We’ll enjoy some time in Glastonbury town itself before making our way up to Glastonbury Tor, the hill that defines the skyline and holds centuries of folklore. From the summit, we’ll take in the wide views and pause for a break before looping back.

Back at the hotel, there’s time to freshen up before we head out together to a local eatery for dinner.

  • After breakfast and check out, we drive a short 3 miles to begin our final walk from the National Trust car park (free for members, £2 donation suggested for others).

This circular walk explores the Polden Hills, offering a quieter, lesser-known slice of Somerset. We’ll pass through nature reserves, visit Lollover Hill, pause for a break at the pub in Compton Dundon, and climb to Windmill Hill, where a striking obelisk marks a memorial to Admiral Robert Blake – one of Britain’s most important naval commanders.

We aim to finish in the early afternoon, giving you time to begin your journey home after a rewarding and social weekend of walking.

The History and Legend of Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury Tor stands as one of England’s most iconic landmarks, steeped in history and legend. Rising dramatically above the Somerset Levels, the Tor has been a spiritual site for centuries, associated with Celtic mythology, the Isle of Avalon, and King Arthur. At its summit, the remains of St. Michael’s Tower serve as a reminder of its religious significance, with a chapel first built here in the 12th century. Whether you’re drawn by its mystical tales or its breathtaking views, the Tor continues to captivate visitors from around the world.

About the Area – Somerset

Somerset is a walker’s paradise, offering a variety of landscapes perfect for group walking and individual exploration. With the Severn Estuary, Exmoor’s dramatic moors and sea cliffs, the rolling hills of the Quantocks, Black Downs, and Mendips, and the wide plains of the Levels, there’s something for walkers of all abilities. This South-West county, nestled between Gloucestershire and Devon, is also home to iconic landmarks like the legendary Glastonbury Tor, associated with King Arthur, and the Roman city of Bath.

The Somerset Levels provide ideal opportunities for leisurely walks and bird-watching, with surrounding small hills offering easy trails and sweeping views. The area is perfect for group walking experiences, where you can enjoy the peaceful countryside and the charm of ancient villages, perhaps with a cider in hand.

Somerset also boasts several long-distance walking trails, including sections of the Coleridge Way and the South West Coast Path. These trails can be linked to create circular day walks, making it easy to explore the county on foot while connecting with like-minded walkers. Whether you’re looking for a challenging group adventure or a relaxing stroll, Somerset has a route for you.
