Learn how to navigate after dark in the North York Moors…

Join one of Large Outdoors’ friendly, expert leaders for a fun few hours navigating in the hills, moorlands and woods of the North York Moors after the sun has gone down. We’ll be covering some very uneven ground in places, so walking boots are essential. Your leader will teach you the ins-and-outs of navigating at night, sharing invaluable tips and methods to help you find your way with confidence.

During the evening we will cover up to 5.3 miles (8.5km) whilst walking near the lovely village of Lastingham. The village is home to a lovely pub called The Blacksmiths Arms - we’ll meet outside here - and they offer dinner, drinks and overnight stays (please contact them directly for availability).

Suggested Itinerary

Your Large Outdoors guide will welcome you and the other participants for this guided night navigation session. There’ll be time for a safety briefing and to check everyone’s head torch is working properly (please see the Compulsory Kit List section below) before we begin walking out of the village.

There will be up to 3 hours of learning within our small group (maximum of 8), where you’ll learn how to improve your night navigation abilities, under the stars of this designated International Dark Sky Reserve.

Keep your eyes peeled for constellations and celestial bodies not visible in light-polluted towns and cities, as well as listening out for nocturnal wildlife. You’ll finish the walk and navigation session looking at night-time landscapes in a new way, and will take away useful navigation tips whether you’re a newbie or proficient map reader.

The use of a compass and map is provided for each participant for this evening navigation session.
