Yorkshire Three Peaks Night-time Challenge
Take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge overnight, enjoying a glorious sunset, starry skies and a beautiful sunrise. A unique, unforgettable experience.
Duration: 12 hours
Level: Tough (Walking). This is a long day with over 1,500m of ascent, and it’s important we travel at a good pace to complete the challenge.
Age: 15+. Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult
Dogs: No dogs, except trained assistance dogs

Completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks within 12 hours is a bucket-list challenge for lots of walkers, and one that many return to. Why not add some extra challenge and adventure by taking on our wonderfully different Yorkshire Three Peaks Night Walk Challenge?
Joined by a friendly group of fellow challengers and an expert guide, you’ll experience the route, and walking generally, in a completely different way. You’ll cover 25 miles (40km) and 1,500m (4921ft) of ascent over 12 hours with your way lit by the moon and your head torch. It’s an incredibly rewarding and fun challenge, not least because the Yorkshire Dales National Park is an International Dark Skies Reserve, meaning you’ll walk under a breathtaking blanket of stars on a clear night!
Not only will this walk require greater concentration, you’ll also need plenty of good old grit and determination given you’ll be working against your body clock’s natural rhythm!
The reward though, particularly when blessed with a fine night, is to see the iconic shapes of the three peaks – , Ingleborough (2,372ft/723m), Whernside (2415ft/736m) and Pen-y-Ghent (2,277ft/694m) – silhouetted against the sky with beams of moonlight or thousands of stars suspended above the lofty landmarks.
This, together with a sunset to get us in our stride and a sunrise that will rejuvenate weary legs during the final few miles, will make it a very special experience.
Itinerary
Meet your guide and walking group at Horton in Ribblesdale near sundown (exact time of meeting will be confirmed ahead of the challenge) for introductions, orientation, and kit check. Once ready, we’ll set off to the first peak!
Over the course of the walk, you’ll tackle three fantastic peaks: Ingleborough (2,372ft/723m), Whernside (2,415ft/736m) and Pen-y-Ghent (2,277ft/694m).
Our aim is to complete the challenge within 12 hours and while most of the route will be along fairly distinct paths, it will involve significant ascents and descents on variable terrain.
You’ll enjoy the challenge with a group of friendly fellow walkers, which will add a feel-good, team-spirit element to the day. You’ll be led by qualified, first-aid certified guides with an in-depth knowledge of the route, adaptations for weather conditions, and techniques for walking at a safe, comfortable, and sociable pace.
We aim to be on Pen-y-Ghent for sunrise, and by the time we’ve completed the circuit we’ll most likely dive into a café for a well-deserved breakfast!

Parking: Please do not park on the road in front of residents’ houses. There are plenty of pay-and-display card parks in the area that usually cost between £3 and £5 for the day.
You will be sent the exact time to meet ahead of the event.
We meet beside the footbridge (next to the two road bridges), near the Crown Hotel. If you park in the main village car park, head past the toilets and cross the bridge. We'll be on the other side. the postcode for the main car park is BD24 0HE but please note there are other car parks you can use should this one be full.
