A walking escape along the Northumberland Coast National Landscape is always something special, and our recent short break exploring Lindisfarne, Bamburgh, and Beadnell was no exception. With a mix of coastal walks, wildlife spotting, and stargazing, it was a fantastic weekend filled with fresh sea air and great company.
Friday Night – Dark Skies over Holy Island
After arriving at our hotel and enjoying a delicious meal, we took the opportunity to head out in the van to Holy Island. With the island’s Dark Sky status, it was the perfect chance to stargaze. John brought along a telescope, allowing us to observe Jupiter in stunning detail and marvel at the craters on the Moon. A magical start to the weekend.
Saturday – Coastal Walk from High Newton to Bamburgh
After breakfast, we set off for Bamburgh, parking near the beach to take in the spectacular view of Bamburgh Castle before stopping for coffee. From there, we caught the bus to High Newton, where we started our coastal walk along the sandy shores.
The first stretch took us to Beadnell Bay, a breathtaking expanse of golden sands. The sunshine and sea breeze made for perfect walking conditions. Stopping for lunch in the seaside village of Beadnell, we were treated to a display of Northumberland’s rich birdlife, spotting various waders and seabirds as we ate.
The next section was a relaxed walk through the sand dunes leading to Seahouses. After an essential ice cream stop, we began the final leg back to Bamburgh. With the tide rolling in, we alternated between walking along the beach and weaving through the dunes, where we made an unexpected discovery—an enormous puffball mushroom, the largest any of us had ever seen.
By late afternoon, we arrived back in Bamburgh, ready to relax at our accommodation after a brilliant day of exploring.
Sunday – Walking the Pilgrims’ Way to Lindisfarne
We set off early to ensure we could cross to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) with the receding tide. From our hotel, we walked to the causeway, where we began our journey across the famous Pilgrims’ Way, a historic route across the sands that has been used for centuries.
The path is marked by tall wooden posts, guiding us safely across. Walking over the sand with 360-degree views and almost no one else in sight was a truly unique experience. Along the way, we spotted plenty of wading birds feeding in the shallows, adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
Once on Lindisfarne, we took some time to explore. Some of us headed to Lindisfarne Castle and the Priory, while others sought out the Lindisfarne Mead Shop, famous for its traditional honey wine.
With careful timing to ensure we didn’t get stranded, we returned via the tidal causeway, marking the end of a fantastic walking weekend on the Northumberland Coast National Landscape.
A Perfect Short Break for Coastal Walking
This weekend was the perfect mix of scenic walks, history, and nature, with stunning views throughout. From the Pilgrims’ Way to Lindisfarne to the golden beaches of Beadnell and Bamburgh, it was a brilliant way to experience one of the UK’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.
