Explore Northumberland National Park

Northumberland National Park is one of the UK’s most unspoiled and least-populated national parks, stretching from the rolling Cheviot Hills in the north to the rugged landscapes surrounding Hadrian’s Wall in the south. Covering over 400 square miles, it’s a place of vast open spaces, ancient history, and a true sense of remoteness.

With its wild moorlands, river valleys, and hidden waterfalls, the park offers endless opportunities for walking, wildlife spotting, and exploring historic sites. The Cheviots provide some of the most spectacular upland walking in England, while the Coquet Valley and Simonside Hills offer breathtaking views without the crowds.

The park is also home to an incredible array of archaeological treasures, from prehistoric hillforts to Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marks the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. For those looking for adventure, this is a place to truly immerse yourself in nature and history.

Northumberland’s Dark Skies

Northumberland National Park is part of Europe’s largest Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places in the UK to experience the night sky in its full glory. Thanks to minimal light pollution, the park offers exceptionally clear views of the Milky Way, distant galaxies, and even the Northern Lights on occasion.

Key spots for stargazing include:

  • The Kielder Observatory – A world-renowned observatory offering guided astronomy sessions.

  • Cawfields Quarry – A stunning dark sky viewing area along Hadrian’s Wall.

  • The College Valley – A remote location with unparalleled night-time views.

On our walking breaks in the park, we take advantage of these pristine conditions, offering optional evening stargazing sessions where you can witness Northumberland’s famous dark skies in all their beauty.

Where is Northumberland National Park and Northumberland Coast National Landscape?
