What Are the Yorkshire Three Peaks?

At the south-western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, three iconic hills have become a well-known walking challenge across the UK: Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-Ghent. Collectively known as the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the route has been attracting walkers since the first recorded completion time of 10 hours in 1887. Today, the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is one of the most popular outdoor challenges in the country.

The appeal of this challenge isn’t necessarily the height of the peaks, although Whernside holds the title of the highest peak in North Yorkshire. Instead, it’s the combination of dramatic scenery and the unique topography of the area. Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent have steep southern slopes that create an impressive backdrop, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of peat bog and open plains. This makes it a fantastic option for a walking challenge that tests both endurance and spirit.

In total, the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is around 25 miles long with approximately 1,500 metres of ascent and descent. The route traditionally starts and ends in Horton-in-Ribblesdale and can be walked in either direction. With a road crossing between each hill and well-marked paths, there’s flexibility if you only want to tackle one or two of the peaks on the day.

For many, completing the route in under 12 hours is the goal, making it a popular choice for those looking to push their limits or participate in a charity challenge or corporate team-building day. If you're aiming to join a Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge weekend, we also offer fully hosted packages with accommodation and meals to make the experience even more enjoyable.

A Scenic Walking Weekend in the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales provide some of the most stunning scenery in the UK, and the views from the three peaks are well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Lake District, Morecambe Bay, and even the Forest of Bowland. Along the way, you’ll encounter unique features like the limestone pavements of Ingleborough and the Ribblehead Viaduct, part of the historic Settle to Carlisle railway.

In addition to its natural beauty, the area is steeped in history. The summit of Ingleborough is home to the remains of an ancient hill fort, while the Pennine Way crosses the slopes of Pen-y-Ghent. There’s also a rich tradition of caving, thanks to the limestone landscape, which hides a vast network of underground tunnels.
