Exploring North York Moors Amazing Coastline
The charms of the North York Moors stretch of coastline between Whitby and Saltburn have not been lost on us, which is why Large Outdoors is running more trips to explore and walk through this beautiful part of the country.
Recently, I joined our friends Sean and Tricia of Real Staithes as they hosted an open day at their fisherman’s hut on the foreshore of Port Mulgrave – a gem of a place.
Sean is a fantastic guide (named by The Guardian recently as one of the top 10 guides in the world) with wonderful stories to tell as he takes you on an adventure along the coastline.
Whether it’s foraging for edible finds, from seaweed through to crabs, or hunting for fossils or pieces of the area’s own minor gemstone Whitby Jet, the Real Staithes’ experience is a real joy.
Having built up an appetite after all that foraging, Tricia then serves an amazing three-course meal back at the hut. Dishes include kelp crisps, lobster chowder and homemade cake, all washed down by elderflower champagne.
Tricia also has a passion for colour and she runs an ancient paint palette course where you create pigments from local finds such as ochre from the rock and charcoal from driftwood collected on the beach.
We’re plotting to include more of their trips in future events so watch this space for more details.
