Are you new to Large Outdoors? Don’t panic!
If you’re coming on your first trip with us there can be a lot of questions on your mind. Here we try and briefly cover the main areas if you’re new to a guided walking weekend away, what to expect, and some hints and tips to get you ready. Remember, it’s going to be fun!
Kit, and what to wear when walking
If the kit list looks daunting then don’t worry – you’ll be surprised how many things you may already have, and the rest doesn’t have to be expensive. Walking boots or shoes are a good idea as they’ll keep your feet dry and will have the grip to cope with hill paths. Likewise, waterproofs will keep you dry and comfortable. But you probably already have a warm jumper and a hat, and other items can be picked up from any good high street outdoor shop.
The kind of places we stay
We love hostels; they’re big, have social spaces where we can sit round and chat in the evenings, and are usually kitted out for walkers. They’re also fantastic for big groups, with the space we need to put on a great weekend. What this does mean though is that you’ll be sharing a room with other people. Some people love it, but if you’re nervous, then don’t worry – most people are at some point! You’ll find the rest of the group friendly and welcoming, and if there’s the odd snorer, we provide free earplugs!
What am I going to eat?
On most of our weekends we have a host who cooks the evening meals, and who may also be out walking with you during the day. The meals are more than enough to fill you up, are freshly prepared and cooked, and are healthy. We can cater for any dietary requirements as long as you let us know up to 5 days before the trip.
How far do we walk?
There are usually (apart from small trips) walk options on each day, meaning we usually put on a longer and a shorter walk. You’ll still be out all day, enjoying the landscape, but shorter walks are generally lower and have more breaks. If you want something bigger then the longer walks usually go up into the hills whenever we can!
I’m still panicking!
If you’ve still got questions, we’re usually online and able to chat about your trip plans. Find us on live chat on the website, or send an email to hello@largeoutdoors.com!
