  • Develop your navigation skills in a supportive group that will enable you to stride out with more confidence, knowing you can read the landscape and the map to explore the UK’s mountains!

This course is aimed at those with prior navigation experience. If you are a beginner and want to know how to use a compass and map, we do offer introductory courses – ‘Independent Hillwalker Walker, Snowdonia’ or ‘Independent Hillwalker, Ironbridge’.

How do we grade our walks?

Our two-day advanced navigation course, in the mountains of North Wales...

What if you’re in the mountains when the cloud comes in and there’s no path? Or you want to go out after dark on a moonlit wander? You’ll probably want a better understanding of the terrain and of techniques you can use to know exactly where you are, and where you’re going.

Our advanced navigation course, Independent Mountain Walker, builds on what you already know about navigation to refine your techniques. If you are happy following paths, walls or other clear features and want to be able to find your way across open terrain, with little to guide you other than your skills and your compass, then this is the course for you.

You will be in a small group with an expert Large Outdoors instructor. Around all the teaching, we still aim to provide the same sociable experience you'd find on our other weekends, with cosy accommodation and home-cooked meals included.

What we cover on the course:

  • Fine detailed navigation

  • Bad weather techniques

  • More accurate contour interpretation

  • Taking bearings

  • What do you do if you get lost?

If you are new to navigation and would call yourself a beginner, then our other courses are probably more suited to you – ‘Independent Hillwalker Walker, Snowdonia’ or ‘Independent Hillwalker, Ironbridge’.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Feel free to arrive at the hostel at any time after 5pm, where your Large Outdoors host will be busy preparing dinner, which will be served around 8pm. You’ll be introduced to your group companions, before settling into the rhythm of the weekend. There’ll be a short briefing about how the weekend will work if you haven’t been on a trip with us before. Other than that, the evening is yours to relax and get to know fellow participants. This trip runs alongside another Large Outdoors experience, so there’s also chance to chat to others who will be looking forward to their outdoor adventures over the weekend.

Day 2

After breakfast, you’ll meet your Large Outdoors navigation instructor. After assessing your ability and getting your brains warmed up and back into navigation mode, your instructor will be able to introduce you to all the new techniques you’ll need for more advanced navigation. The specific locations and routes will depend on the group’s experience and local weather conditions, but you’ll soon be testing out your abilities, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Snowdonia.

Returning to the accomodation in the late afternoon, it’ll be the perfect time to grab a drink and relax. We normally find people gravitate to the lounge and relive the day with their group companions, or swap stories with other Large Outdoors participants about the day’s adventures.

Day 3

Today, after breakfast and checking out of the accommodation, you’ll head out on your second full day of tuition and practice. After more hours of learning, testing yourselves, and ultimately becoming advanced navigators, the day will finish around 3pm or 4pm, when there’s always time for a final tea-room visit if the group would like, before saying your goodbyes and heading home.

We’re confident that after this weekend you’ll be able to find your way with map and compass over the most featureless terrain, in bad weather and with only contours to go on. And however far you get this weekend, it’ll be an eye-opening experience into some new navigation techniques you can use in your future walks.

Please note: On some days there could be a short drive required - where activities don’t start from the door of the accommodation. We don't include transport and participants normally car share.

  • The first designated National Park in Wales, Snowdonia (Eryri National Park) includes Wales’ highest mountain, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), and an array of other peaks. Beyond the mountains, there are valleys, sandy estuaries, glacial lakes, forests and miles of walking trails.

Bounded by the Rivers Conwy and Dovey in the east and south, the view to the north and west stretches over the sea where, on a clear day, you can see the Llyn Peninsula, Cardigan Bay and even Ireland. Nestled among the mountains, you’ll find the history of the area in the form of sheep farming, forestry, and slate mining, and settlements dating back thousands of years.
