How do we grade our walks?

Pretty Yorkshire Dales scenery, a happy band of fellow walkers, experienced guides planning interesting walks, home cooked food and a traditional pub…

…all the elements for a feel-good weekend that leaves you thinking of endless possibilities for the year ahead! If ever there was a mood-booster then it’s a winter walk. Which brings us to Swaledale and Wensleydale – a landscape that offers so much in winter irrespective of the weather – from windswept moorland to sheltered woodland; snaking rivers to spectacular waterfalls; sturdy stone villages to historic ruins.

For this Kickstarter weekend we harness winter’s special powers for two days of walking, staying in YHA Grinton Lodge, a former shooting retreat for nobility that commands a spectacular position across to Reeth and the surrounding Dales scenery.

With a large group of up to 50 guests this weekend will be a real social gathering and with a great mix of those wanting to do easier ambles as well as the more seasoned full-on hikers. With walks and meals all taken care of, you can simply enjoy the experience and find out why winter can actually be a great time to get outside.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

We have exclusive use of YHA Grinton Lodge and the Large Outdoors host will be there from 5pm with cups of tea for the first arrivals. As we help people settle in and introduce them to the other guests, the place soon fills with chatter and then by 8pm when we serve dinner, it’s like we’ve known each other for ages!  Over dinner we outline the planned walks for the weekend and help you choose which level might be most suitable.

Day 2

After breakfast we pack up lunch and then head out. Each of the walks we offer (subject to participant numbers) will explore some lovely local scenery.

For those wanting a more leisurely amble your guide will plan a route that explores the River Swale and the historic mining remains of Swaledale. Alternatively, you can choose more active guided walks that climb higher up into the more remote reaches of the Dale such as Grinton Moor or the dramatic and lofty rocky escarpment of Fremington Edge, before the path dips down and back via the market town of Reeth.

Once back at Grinton Lodge there’s time to freshen up and relax - perhaps even stroll down to the local pub - before another home-cooked dinner is served. Later on, back at the hostel, there’s plenty of space to carry on conversations or join in what has now become a bit of a Large Outdoors tradition with larger gatherings – the infamous session of bingo, or a quiz!

Day 3

Today we have breakfast and then pack up our belongings, before checking out of the hostel. Again, we will have a choice of guided walks (subject to participants numbers). For some of these we might drive further afield - for example, we could pop along to neighbouring Wensleydale and follow routes that take in the wonderful sight of Aysgarth Falls.

Hopefully, this weekend of being outside in winter, when nature can be at its most powerful, will have offered a truly invigorating experience and you can head home with a clear and de-stressed mind.

Please note: On some days there could be a short drive required - where activities don’t start from the door of the accommodation. We don't include transport and participants normally car share.
