Suggested Itinerary
For this moderate 10-mile walk we’re sharing a superb option for exploring a quieter spot in the North York Moors National Park – one of those “keep it under your hat because this is fantastic” places that has all the hallmarks of a cracking good day. Pack your lunch and your walking kit and join Large Outdoors for a great sociable day walk.
Hawnby is our start and finish point – a lovely hamlet where the green and village pub are very much the focal point (and one that we may well be drawn to at the end of the day).
Lovely woodland and a quiet valley ease us into the walk before a steep-ish pull up onto the Dale Town Common. Here we might well (subject to opening season/times) do a bit of a detour to High Paradise Farm for a cuppa at their café, which you can only reach on foot or two wheels. We’ll be picking a suitably scenic spot to stop and enjoy our packed lunches too.
We then follow the forest edge, joining the Cleveland Way National Trail and crossing open moorland, enjoying the exhilarating views across from the ridge to the Vale of Mowbray and the Yorkshire Dales beyond. A few miles further along we alter direction and with our noses pointed towards Hawnby we start our return, losing height as we drop down into ancient woodland before reaching the impressive mansion Arden Hall. From here it’s then just a stroll back into the hamlet and the end to our walk. Some participants will continue chatting with their group over some post-walk refreshment at the pub if it’s open - a lovely way to round off the day’s activity.
