Discover Sutton Bank: ‘England’s Finest View’ Transformed During the Dark Skies Festival

James Herriot, the renowned vet and author of "All Creatures Great and Small," once described Sutton Bank in the North York Moors National Park as ‘England’s Finest View’. Join us as we head towards this incredible viewpoint during the special Dark Skies Festival night walk.

This guided group walk, approximately 4.7 miles (7.5 km), will be hosted by a Large Outdoors leader.

Suggested Itinerary

Your Large Outdoors guide will welcome you and other participants at Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, for this night walk. There will be time for a safety briefing and to ensure everyone's head torches are working properly (please see the Compulsory Kit List section below) before we begin.

Just feet from our meeting place, we’ll be plunged into darkness as we make our way along trails to the edge of the escarpment at Sutton Bank. From our viewpoint, we’ll see the twinkling lights of distant towns and villages below. However, the real stars of tonight are above us.

Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, you’ll witness a sky filled with stars. As the North York Moors National Park is a designated International Dark Sky Reserve, it’s one of the best places in the world for stargazing. This humbling experience allows you to truly lose yourself in the night sky. Our guides will help you spot constellations and other celestial bodies, including planets, satellites, and shooting stars.

We’ll be walking for up to 3 hours, depending on the pace of the group, weather conditions, and stops for stargazing along the way.

After-dark walking is also a great opportunity to learn night navigation techniques from our guides. If you’re interested in finding your way on trails after dark, we’re also running special Night Navigation Experience evenings during the Dark Skies Festival.
