Suggested Itinerary
Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!
Day 1
Transport is included this weekend and we’re offering complimentary Pickups at 3:30pm from Hexham Train Station. Otherwise, feel free to arrive at our accommodation from 5pm, where you’ll be greeted by your Large Outdoors host for the weekend.
The group will be accommodated across a couple of the lovely guest lodges at Brown Rigg, in Bellingham. This weekend we’ll be exploring part of Northumberland National Park and the Gold Tier Northumberland International Dark Sky Park - recognised for the clarity of its night sky and lack of light pollution, making it the perfect place to get to know the stars overhead.
But this evening is all about getting to know your fellow walkers/stargazers, unloading from the stress of the week, and chatting about the weekend ahead. We’ll head out somewhere local for a group dinner (not included) around 8pm and discuss the weekend’s walking and stargazing!
Day 2
Daytime Walk - Our walk today explores the area around our accommodation in Bellingham, a spot that is often overlooked as walkers rush to get north to Scotland. It offers beautiful, varied scenery. We'll be out for 4-6 hours, which allows us time to get back to our accommodation to freshen up and enjoy an early evening meal (not included) somewhere local.
Evening Stargazing - After our early dinner, we’ll drive up through the forest and into the darkness - to the world-famous Kielder Observatory for an incredible evening stargazing experience. We’ll enjoy an enlightening talk on astronomy, and after that we’ll be treated to a tour of the Observatory, before getting a chance to peek at the stars through the powerful telescopes! Much of the Observatory visit is outside, so please make sure you wrap up warm.
Amazing gazing will be in the offing if we have clear skies, when you can expect to see distant galaxies, the Milky Way and star clusters. With experts on-hand there is plenty of time to ask questions, have a go at using some of the telescopes and marvel at the stars. They also serve a rather cracking hot chocolate!
Day 3
Today we’ll enjoy breakfast together, no doubt still excited from the last evening’s stargazing extravaganza, and then we’ll pack up our belongings, check out of the accommodation and head out for a lovely leisurely amble around the local area - there are some great options to choose from.
We’ll aim to finish our walk around lunchtime today. Those who were collected from Hexham Train Station can be dropped back off there after the walk - please book onward travel accordingly, to allow for flexibility with the return time to the train station.

However, we can offer vegetarian, vegan, and/or provide meals with gluten free ingredients - these options can be selected when booking.

Northumberland National Park is fantastic for exploring, both during the day time and at night. 572 square miles of Northumberland has been awarded Gold Tier status for their pristine dark skies, and the International Dark Sky Park there is the largest in the UK.
In the heart of the stunning Kielder Forest is the world-renowned Kielder Observatory, which offers the ideal place to watch in wonder as the magic of this dark sky comes into view. On a clear night you can stand and stare from the observation deck at a sky filled with billions of stars and the Milky Way arching overhead. Inside, powerful telescopes and knowledgeable astronomers open up a world of planets, galaxies and star clusters.
