How do we grade our walks?
Visit Whitby and it will be hard not to be charmed by the quirks of this seaside town. However we save that bit of discovery for the end of the day as, for now, we meet at the bus station and travel north along the coast to the village of Staithes.
Here we hop off the bus and spend a bit of time wandering the cobbled streets of the village where one of our greatest maritime explorers Captain Cook began his working life.
As we stroll towards the harbour, past the jumble of cottages, it’s easy to see why Staithes was once an important fishing port. In the village we pick up the Cleveland Way National Trail and begin our journey south back to Whitby.
The route is undulating as we climb up onto the cliff top and look below at the remains of Port Mulgrave before dipping down to the superb swathe of sand at Runswick Bay. From here we climb again past the more remote Kettleness headland and then drop down to the pretty village of Sandsend with its characteristic sandstone cottages and stream trickling down to the sea.
By this point we’ll have the distinctive shape of Whitby Abbey in our sights as we step out for the final stretch of the walk.
Back at Whitby there’s time enough to explore the town and see why the Dracula-connections have led to it becoming a magnet for the Goth community!
Plus, it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t end the day with fish and chips so you perhaps you’ll want to carry on the chatter with your fellow participants over some traditional seaside fare (not included), before the group goes their separate ways?
Please note bus ticket is not included in the price of this experience - currently £2pp.
