Enjoy a friendly walking weekend in the Cotswolds, staying in a cosy inn!

Ah the Cotswolds – a wonderful place to escape to with plenty of wow factor for walkers with handsome honey-coloured stone villages, thatched cottages, rolling hills, sedate market towns that are made for browsing and plenty of inns and cafes that seem determined to outdo one another in the quality of food they offer.

There’s so much to love especially as our base for this two-night break is a cosy inn which not only offers even more comfort but is also in the centre of Moreton-in-Marsh, a genteel market town with a mainline station (with direct links to London) for those keen to travel by train. We then help you discover the finest spots in the Cotswolds through a weekend of guided walks in the friendly company of a handful of fellow walkers.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

  • The Redesdale Arms entices you in the moment you see it in the centre of Moreton-in-Marsh, which is just as well as this is our base for the weekend. This historic inn, which is only a few minutes’ walk from the mainline station where trains run to London Paddington, has all the comfort and laid back feel that is perfect for a weekend escape.

You are welcome to check-in anytime after 4pm and the Large Outdoors host will be at The Redesdale Arms from 6pm to welcome you. If you arrive early, then it’s worth wandering through Moreton-in-Marsh, which has some great independent shops.

After a drink and introductions in the bar, the group will sit down for an evening meal around 8pm (not included in the cost of this trip) and a chance to get to know each other.

  • After a lovely cooked breakfast, and with the hotel’s packed lunch in our day packs, we hop on the bus (fares and packed lunch are included in the price of the weekend) to take us to the picturesque village of Stow-on-the-Wold. Here we head out for an 12-mile ramble which will take us through some of the must-see places in the Cotswolds.

We start by following a stretch of the long distance path The Monarch’s Way, to reach the village of Lower Slaughter. Then we press on through lovely riverside surroundings to Bourton-on-the-Water, which is known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ thanks to the River Windrush gently flowing through the village. We’ll probably make the most of the scenery with a café stop in Bourton, before picking up the Diamond Way path to Icomb and then turning north back to Stow-on-the-Wold.

Before the return bus trip, we may visit one of Stow’s wonderful pubs and savour the day we’ve just had with a drink in-hand.

Back at the accommodation there should be oodles of time to relax and get changed before joining the rest of the group for an evening meal (not included).

  • Today we’re walking from The Redesdale Arms - we’re able to leave our belongings in the hotel after breakfast and head straight out for another day of Cotswold loveliness.

We soon leave the bustling market town behind as we follow the path through meadows and the parkland of Batsford House before a woodland climb brings us to Bourton-on-the-Hill, a bewitching village on a steep hill with fantastic panoramic views that make it worth the climb!

From here we press on to the sleepy village of Longborough before turning our noses for home and back to Moreton-in-the-Marsh, where we give the group the chance to have a final cup of tea and cake in one of the cafes if desired, before saying our farewells and heading home.
