How do we grade our walks?
Suggested Itinerary
Day 1
And relax! As soon as you breathe in the sea air, look across at the beautiful coastal scenery and say hello to your Large Outdoors host who will be making a hot drink as you arrive, you’ll soon unwind.
Tonight we dine in the hostel with a home-cooked meal and spend the evening getting to know the group. We will also be outlining the plans for the next few days including the various walk options – that is if we can get a word-in!
Day 2
Today we hop aboard the coach we’ve organised to whisk the whole group a short distance further up the coast, where we’ll offer a choice of walks (one shorter).
Both walk options will finish by crossing over (on a receding tide) to the fascinating tidal island of Lindisfarne, known as Holy Island, either following in the footsteps of monks who walked through the sand, or strolling along the cobbled causeway.
Once on the island there’s time to explore the sights in the village including the priory ruins, or sample some locally made mead, before the coach picks us up to take us back to Seahouses.
Once back at base there will be cups of tea on the go and plenty of chilling out before we serve dinner.
Day 3
Today we board the coach for a trip southwards to the wonderful fishing village of Craster, famous for its kippers! Here we divide into two walking groups – one following a more strenuous route – and head back to Seahouses.
Our routes will follow stretches of the Northumberland Coast Path including the section to Dunstanburgh Castle from Craster which has previously topped a list of the best UK coastal walks. It’s hard not to see why when you witness the waves crashing on the rocky ledges and look ahead to the impressive remains of the castle on the headland in front of us.
Once back at Seahouses there’s time aplenty to wander through the village if you want before settling back at the hostel and devouring a meal.
Day 4
No lacing up of the walking boots needed today as for our final hurrah we’re all heading out on a 3-hour boat trip to the famous wildlife sanctuary, the Farne Islands.
The boat departs at 10am from Seahouses and takes us over to the islands where it’s highly likely we’ll catch sight of the colony of inquisitive grey seals before taking in the splendour of seeing so many nesting birds, from puffins and guillemots to kittiwakes and cormorants.
Once back at Seahouses there’s a chance for one last meal together, no doubt fish and chips or a café lunch, before saying our goodbyes!

In the far north-east of England, Northumberland is part of the border country, just south of Scotland. It was the hotbed of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon times and the famous monastery at Lindisfarne on Holy Island is still a site of pilgrimage today. Alongside these ruins lie several impressive ruined castles, including Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, and sites of Roman occupation. The coast ranges between beautiful beaches, cliffs festooned with birds, sand dunes and islands where seals bask in the sunshine.
The Northumberland Coast Path runs the full length of the most spectacular sections, and St Cuthbert’s Way takes you out to visit Holy Island. This quiet part of England is a perfect destination for walkers, wildlife lovers and people who just love the peace and quiet that comes with remote and beautiful seaside wanders.
