Climb, Connect, and Explore: A Beginner’s Rock Climbing Weekend in the Peak District

Ready to climb to new heights? Join us for a beginner-friendly rock climbing weekend in the Peak District, where you’ll learn the basics of outdoor climbing with experienced instructors and a group of like-minded adventurers.

Rock climbing is an exhilarating sport that challenges your strength, balance, and determination. It’s also a fantastic social activity, as climbing with others encourages confidence and camaraderie. Our Introduction to Rock Climbing is designed for absolute beginners as well as those with indoor climbing experience looking to try climbing outdoors. With stunning rock faces and varied terrain, the Peak District National Park provides the perfect natural setting for learning and exploring this new skill.

Guided by a professional instructor, you’ll learn essential climbing techniques while taking in beautiful views, building skills, and enjoying the supportive energy of the group. Based at Dalehead Bunkhouse in the serene Edale Valley, this weekend is designed to help you unplug, focus on technique, and gain confidence on the rocks.

Whether you’re testing your limits for the first time or transitioning from indoor to outdoor climbs, this weekend promises an unforgettable experience in one of the UK’s most popular climbing locations.

Suggested Itinerary

Please note, this is a suggested itinerary and may be adjusted depending on weather and other factors.

  • Arrive at the cosy Dalehead Bunkhouse from 5pm, where your Large Outdoors host will welcome you and introduce you to your fellow climbers. This is a joint event, so you’ll also have the chance to meet other Large Outdoors participants who are joining different experiences over the weekend.

Dinner will be served at 8pm, followed by a briefing on the weekend’s climbing plans. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions, connect with the group, and start preparing for the adventures ahead.

  • After a hearty breakfast and preparing your packed lunch each morning, we’ll set out to explore the local crags and start building foundational outdoor climbing skills. Over these two days, your instructor will guide you through key techniques and ensure a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.

You’ll visit different rock faces (transport not included) to gain hands-on practice in various environments, giving you a comprehensive introduction to Peak District climbing. Here’s what you’ll learn during the weekend:

    • Selecting and using climbing equipment correctly

    • Understanding climbing grade systems and using guidebooks

    • Essential crag etiquette and safe practices

    • Climbing movement techniques and building confidence

    • Tying into a rope and belaying a partner

    • Terminology, types of protection, and placing anchors

    • How to set up safe belay stations and protection

All equipment is provided, along with expert instruction tailored to complete beginners and those looking to transition from indoor walls to natural rock.

    Evenings at Dalehead Bunkhouse
On Saturday evening, you’ll return to the bunkhouse to relax, share stories, and enjoy a warm, home-cooked meal prepared by your host. Unwind in the cosy lounge, enjoy the starlit skies of the Peak District, and recharge for your final day of climbing.

  • On Sunday morning, after packing up your belongings and checking out, we’ll head out for a final climbing session. This day will consolidate everything you’ve learned, allowing you to put your new skills into practice. The session ends by 5pm, when we’ll say our goodbyes—hopefully leaving with a passion for climbing and new friends for future adventures.

Please Note: Some climbing spots may require a short drive from the bunkhouse. Transport is not included, and participants typically arrange car shares.
