How do we grade our walks?
Enjoy the beautiful scenery of pretty North York Moors National Park villages and surrounding countryside…
There’s a real charm to this area of North Yorkshire. It’s only an hour from the busy city of York, but this part of the North York Moors National Park has a much slower pace and some chocolate-box worthy villages to explore.
This experience is a lovely circular Leisurely Plus walk (learn how we grade our walks) of 10 miles (16km). There’s a Large Outdoors guide to take care of navigation and fellow walkers to soak up the scenery with. Most groups complete this walk in around 6 hours.
Suggested Itinerary
We will meet up in Hutton-le-Hole where there is a large pay-and-display car park. Hutton-le-hole is one of the most photographed villages of the North York Moors, with a spring flowing through the middle and old sandstone houses arranged around the village green.
From here, your Large Outdoors guide will lead the group out along the Tabular Hills - a long distance route from Helmsley to Scarborough. Along country paths and fields, we make our way to Appleton-le-Moors. Maybe not for today, but this is a great place to stop off and enjoy a pint in one of our favourite pubs “The Moors Inn”.
We leave Appleton-le-Moors, through rolling fields and lovely old woods before arriving at Cropton, home to a local brewery and pub. After Cropton, we head to our last village and this is Lastingham. Where possible, we will make a slight detour into St Mary’s Church in Lastingham, with its crypts dating back to 1078. Lastingham is also the base for many of our dark skies night walks and night navigation experiences. The Blacksmiths Arms in Lastingham is also a firm favourite pub for our weary walkers and we will perhaps stop for refreshments.
Then its time for the final part of the walk, back to Hutton-le-Hole. If you have time, perhaps you’d like to browse the local craft shops; enjoy a cuppa and cake at one of the tearooms; wander around the buildings and collections of the open-air Ryedale Folk Museum; or maybe pop to The Crown Inn, another traditional North York Moors pub.
