How do we grade our walks?
Gorgeous Pennine walking and gritty mill scenery…
The Calder Valley has all the ingredients for a perfect day walk, not least as it is slap bang on the long distance trail, the Pennine Way. Think atmospheric moorland, enchanting woodland-clad valleys, historic mill towns, cosy pubs, hefty slices of homemade cake and friendly fellow walkers.
Pack up your lunch and lace up your walking boots for a great, sociable day out with Large Outdoors. This fully guided Active walk (learn how we grade our walks) covers approximately 10 miles (16km) and overs a good leg-stretch over undulating terrain.
Suggested Itinerary
For this West Yorkshire ramble we start and finish in the bohemian market town of Hebden Bridge, which has become a hub for artists resulting in a seriously cool place to mooch around.
More of that later though, as first there’s a veritable hamper of walking delights to do. We meet at Hebden Bridge’s train station where your Large Outdoors guide will lead the group out towards Middle Dean. From there, we head up a farm track, taking in the views that open up of the valley and the mill town below as we climb higher.
Eventually, we reach the lofty moorland heights of the Nook before skirting round the edge of Shackleton Knoll and stop for a breather to make the most of the views. Then it’s onto Hardcastle Crags meandering along a lovely trail through 400 acres of woodland. All being well, we’ll stop in at the National Trust’s Weaving Shed Café at Gibson Mill, perhaps giving into temptation and a treat or two.
Afterwards, we follow the river back into Hebden Bridge where there’s generally time for the aforementioned mooch around - there’s plenty of great independent shops that are very enticing. Perhaps you might like to join some of your fellow participants for a celebratory cuppa and cake, or an early dinner in one of the town’s cosy pubs before heading home?
