How do we grade our walks?
A brilliant clifftop walk perfect for nature lovers
Jagged chalk cliffs, a famous lighthouse view, and thousands of squawking seabirds circling around their cliffside roosts below.
These are just some of the highlights on this 10-mile guided walk between Flamborough Head and Bempton Cliffs on Yorkshire’s stunning coastline.
So first to the white lighthouse at Flamborough, our starting point for the day a short stroll from the ample pay and display car park where there are also toilets and a café.
From the lighthouse we make a beeline for the cliff tops where we can hang our noses over the edge to see the caves at High Stacks and the aptly named Drinking Dinosaur rock arch. If we’re lucky we might also glimpse a colony of seals.
Then we turn north and follow the headland, admiring the impressive 200-foot high white cliffs that give Dover a run for its money. On a bright sunny day the sea becomes turquoise and you could easily think you’re abroad. Of course it’s hard not to notice the cacophony of sound that accompanies our every step and as you look across and down you’ll see the culprits; the hundreds of sea birds such as Gannets, Shags, Kittiwakes, Fulmars and Puffins that have colonised the cliffs.
The walking is easy, made even more so with the distraction of so many great views whether it’s seeing the distant shapes of Scarborough Castle and Whitby ahead of us or peering down the grass and chalk cliff sides and noticing delightful coves such as North Landing or Thornwick Bay
Around five miles along we reach Bempton Cliffs and the RSPB reserve which is home to the UK mainland’s largest colony of Gannets. Here we can spend time at the viewing platforms enjoying seeing these graceful birds dive and swoop. We might also see dolphins in the sea below. Then we turn around and head back to Flamborough, retracing our outward route to make the most of the cliff views and the exhilaration of walking in such a great natural wildlife haven (we dismissed a circular walk on this occasion as the inland route is a little staid by comparison and we thought it would provide even more opportunities for spotting dolphins and other wildlife that you might not have seen on the outward journey).
Once back at Flamborough, we’ll dive into a café for an ice cream or other well-deserved treats before heading for home.
A note on the seabirds: While gannets (the stars of the show for many!) are around for most of the year, other migrating seabirds are mainly visible from April to July.
