Suggested Itinerary
Starting from the main car park in Avebury, you’ll meet your Large Outdoors guide before heading south along the River Kennet shortly arriving at our first monument - Silbury Hill. Built around 2400BC this is the largest man made mound in Europe and would have taken hundreds of people years to complete. It purpose like so much of this landscape remains a mystery.
On leaving Silbury Hill we head to our next stop on this neolithic adventure as we explore the West Kennet Long barrow. This is one of the largest and most impressive graves in the UK. There will be time to explore the barrow before we head on to our next monument.
On reaching the Sanctuary we will explore the complex or circular posts, these are now concrete but would have originally been wood and stone. Again the exact reason for the sanctuary is unknown. From here we join the Ridgeway a long distance path and head north with sweeping views down over the landscape.
Our penultimate stop is Windmill Hill a classic example and the largest Neolithic causewayed enclosure in Britain. From here we head back into Avebury with time for refreshments and of course time to explore the famous Avebury Stone Circle. The circle of stones is the largest in Britain and dates to around 2850 BC - 2200 BC.
