Got your waterproofs, warm layers, and walking boots ready for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge? You're almost set! But before you head out on this epic walking weekend covering 12 hours and varied terrain, let's talk about what you should pack in your rucksack to stay prepared and comfortable.

John talks you through what you should have in your rucksack when you complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Essential Gear for the Yorkshire Three Peaks

Plenty of Water
Start the day with at least 2-3 litres of water. Staying hydrated is essential, especially on a walk that covers challenging terrain like the Yorkshire Dales. While there are a few places en route to buy drinks, it’s always best to be self-sufficient in case they are closed.

Plenty of Food
Planning your food is key to completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Test out your snacks on your training walks, and bring options you can eat on the move. We typically stop for a brief lunch, but with the pace of a walking challenge, you’ll want energy-boosting foods for those tough moments.

Personal First Aid Kit
Pack your essential medications, painkillers, plasters, and zinc oxide tape to prevent or treat blisters. A personal first aid kit is always a must when tackling a walking challenge.

Head Torch, Survival Bag & Whistle
For safety, bring a head torch with spare batteries, a survival bag, and a whistle. These items are required for all Large Outdoors participants on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, ensuring you’re ready for any unforeseen delays or emergencies.

Mobile Phone (Fully Charged!)
Keep your phone charged and ready, especially if you need to update your Large Outdoors guide or contact emergency services. It’s also a great way to keep friends updated on your progress throughout the day!

Additional Items for Comfort and Safety

Sun Cream, Hat & Gloves
The Yorkshire Dales can throw every kind of weather at you in a single day, from sunshine to wind and rain. Sun cream is vital, even on cloudy days, and a hat and gloves can keep you warm as temperatures change throughout the day.

Money (Card & Cash)
Be prepared with both card and cash for unexpected taxi fares or refreshment stops along the way.

Spare Socks
A fresh pair of socks can make all the difference when your feet need a morale boost halfway through the day.
