How do we grade our walks?

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Our abode for the weekend is the Foreland Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage, which perches on a cliff edge and has been transformed into a fantastic light-filled space with very comfy rooms and living area. We ask for you to arrive for 5pm, when your Large Outdoors host will be there to welcome you and drive you down the steep private road to the cottage. The access is via a steep flight of steps, so you’ll get an extra workout each time we arrive and leave our lovely lighthouse!

After grabbing a cuppa there’s time to simply absorb the amazing sea views, perhaps stepping out onto the balcony, while meeting your fellow adventurers. Your host will have a delicious meal on the go in the kitchen, leaving you with nothing to do but relax and have a laugh in great company.

We’ll enjoy dinner together at around 8pm, when your host will brief the group on the long weekend’s adventures ahead.

Day 2

After enjoying a relaxed breakfast (cooked options available), we’ll pack up our lunch and set out for the day’s walk. We’ll have a selection of routes to choose from, some leaving from the door of our accommodation and others a short drive away.

Walk options include:

  • Walking stretches of the South West Coast Path that reveal the rugged beauty of the coastline, the timeless villages and the chance to spy marine life such as dolphins and porpoises.

  • Visiting Lynmouth’s beautiful bay before hopping onto the funicular-style railway up to Lynton to continue our walk with the chance to stop in one of the tempting tea rooms for a well-deserved slice of cake.

Once back at the lighthouse there’s ample downtime whether you want to sit with a cup of tea while enjoying the views, or have enough energy left to challenge some of the others to a game of table tennis!

Your Large Outdoors host will then serve an evening meal that is fit for a group of ravenous walkers!

Parking: Foreland Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage is approached via a long narrow private road, which descends steeply and with three hairpin bends. Therefore, we ask that you arrive for 5pm - parking in the designated area for lighthouse guests - and your host will drive everyone down together.

  • Foreland Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage is reached via a series of steps leading down the cliff side. The walk down is worth it though, as the cottage boasts grandstand views (and bags you some extra steps each day - a free mini workout each time we arrive and leave!).

The cottage has been transformed by the National Trust into truly lovely accommodation which retains all the character while offering a cosy lounge, dining area, dedicated games room and balcony. You can also look out at the working part of the lighthouse (minus the foghorn!).

Day 3

This morning, after enjoying another sea-view breakfast and grabbing our packed lunches, we’ll lace-up our walking boots and head out for another day in the glorious Exmoor National Park.

Today we’ll see how the weather is and what the group would like to achieve, but walk options could include:

  • A stroll along a section of the Tarka Trail (named after the famous otter!).

  • Venturing along the beautiful woodland valley paths around the National Trust’s Watersmeet House.

  • Heading over to the Valley of the Rocks - a dramatic and beautiful landscape that looks like a mountain range in miniature. This area is famous for its feral goats so keep your eyes peeled!

This evening we will enjoy a change of scenery by eating out at one of the great local hostelries.

Day 4

After breakfast and having packed up our belongings, we set out for a half-day walk along the coastline which will end with a final lunch in a pub or tearoom (not included in the cost of this trip) before we have to tear ourselves away to return home.
